Royals volleyball volunteers year-round, embraces Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On February 27th, Queens University of Charlotte 's Volleyball team spent the day as one of the lead motivation groups for the Great Start Party – which celebrates the kickoff to walking season for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (AWBC).

Not an actual walk – the event offered the opportunity to attain information about the walk, hear from some of Charlotte's local beneficiaries, meet other walkers, as well as learn about teams, fundraising, and training.

The team cheered on 35 newly registered walkers as they entered the site.

AWBC Training Walk Coordinator Caitlen Nelis spoke highly of the Royals' effort.

“Queens made it special with their enthusiasm, flare, and expertise. I know it meant a lot to each walker to have their own personal cheering station as they walked into the building!”

Head coach Angela McGuire was thrilled about the team's continued support of the cause.

"Participating in the Avon Great Start Party 2010 is something that goes hand-in-hand with one of our team's biggest philanthropies – breast cancer awareness. Every October, we pick a match where we promote Dig For the Cure. It helps bring attention to breast cancer and the many lives it claims each year.”

With the team composed primarily of underclassmen, McGuire saw this event as a way for the ladies to grow personally and as a team.

“By actively being a part of the Great Start Party and meeting some of the people that cancer has touched, it gave our team a great sense of togetherness and community interaction. I want them to understand that there is so much more to life than just our sport – and being part of such a courageous group of people truly opened their eyes to help them understand what it really means to help other people!"

Looking forward, the Royals are excited to continue their support by participating in upcoming AWBC events.

On April 10th, the team will be leading a training walk. During the training walk, the team will coach the participants in a thorough warm up with dynamic and static stretches before enduring a four-mile walk with the participants.

In October, the Royals will be featured in an AWBC cheering booth to help inspire and encourage walkers on their race day
