SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With her second start of the season, Kariel Parian (Auburn, N.H., Manchester Memorial ) scored what was her first goal of the year and the game-winning-goal early in this afternoon's game between Queens University of Charlotte and Converse College. The Royals (7-2 10-5) went on to win the game 2-0 holding tight to their second place spot in Conference Carolinas. Converse (1-6-1 2-12-1) sits in ninth place after the home loss.
Queens opened the game in strike mode firing off two early shots before Parian's connected in the 15th minute of play.
Kelsey Howard (Marietta, Ga., Dominion Christian) passed a ball back to Parian who was overlapping for the shot from 20 yards out. Howard is now one of three Royals with three assists this season.
Sarah Johnson (West Columbia, S.C., Brookland-Cayce) scored the second goal for the Royals in the second half of the game. Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) slotted the ball through the Converse defense to Johnson, who then volleyed a shot from 25 yards out over Converse's keeper at 64:05.
Queens outshot the Valkyries 21-6 in today's win. The Royals also dominated the battle for corner kicks winning five to Converse's zero. Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills ) was awarded the win and shut-out today. Landry saved all five shots-on-goal taken by Converse.
Ashley Mercuri of Converse made 14 saves.
Queens will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne University on October 26th for a game set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
