CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 19, 2009) – Pfeiffer University fought back from being down 2-0 at the half to tie,2-2, with the Royals in double overtime today at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. With the tie, Queens University of Charlotte is now 2-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. The Falcons are 2-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.
Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman )scored the first goal for the Royals around the 13th minute of play. A deflected ball landed in her area and she drove it into the back of the net. Queens' second goal would come from a penalty kick by Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside). During a breakaway, Wright met the Falcons goalie one on one and was fouled in the box. She scored the penalty kick around the 23rd minute.
The Falcons came out ready to play in the second half holding the Royals to two shots compared to their seven. Megan Reaves of Pfeiffer assisted on both goals for her team today. The first goal came from Ashley Hawkins, a straight shot from the right side of the field. Pfeiffer's second goal was scored by Ashleigh Rhoads. Reaves got the ball to her in a breakaway and she notched the second point for the Falcons.
Both overtimes saw key saves by Royals' goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ). Sam Brown of the Falcons had a chance to take the win, but Kornacki left the goal to make a stop on the ball. Kornacki finished the game with five saves.
The Royals are back in action on September 21, 2009 at Belmont Abbey College at 4:00p.m.
