K. Wright scores four to start league action 1-0

Royals overpower Anderson 5-1

ANDERSON, S.C.- In the first Conference Carolinas contest of the year defending co-champions Queens started the league action right with a 5-1 victory over Anderson University in Anderson, S.C. The Royals improved to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in conference action, while the Trojans drop to 0-4 and 0-1.

Freshman Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside)dominated play for Queens contributing four of the five goals. She started her scoring early, just 15 minutes into play to make the game 1-0. The Trojans held off the Royal offense until the 59th minute when Wright struck again.

Queens tallied four goals in the second half, three from Wright and the fourth coming from fellow freshman Megan Sload with just under two minutes left in the game.

After trailing 3-4 in shots during the first stanza, Queens rebounded and out-shot the home team 14- 8 in the second half. The Royals also earned four more cornerkicks than Anderson, 7-3.

Goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) made three saves while giving up one goal. Kelli Whitfield made two saves in 90 minutes and let five goals past her.

Wright led the offense with six shots, scoring on all four she put on the net. Sophomore Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex )was just behind her with five shots.

Jessica Kleinberg contributed four shots for the Trojans and Joelle Purtin scored the only Anderson goal of the game in the 78th minute.

Queens travels to University of North Carolina-Pembroke on Sept. 15 for a nonconference matchup starting at 4pm.
