SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Georgia College and State University put a damper on the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team's 2009 season opener Saturday, Aug. 29 by scoring a goal in each half to defeat the Royals 2-0 in the AASU 2009 Pirate Soccer Shootout in Savannah, Ga.
Daria Owen found the back of the net in the 21st minute off of a corner kick by Karen Bonilla to put the Bobcats(1-0) up, 1-0.The Bobcats outshot the Royals (1-0), 11-5, in the first half.
In the second half, GCSU kept up the pressure, outshooting Queens 7-1, and finally putting in an insurance goal in the 81st minute from Jessica Newland's goal from just outside the box. The Bobcats finished the match with an 18-6 advantage in shots.
The Royals' sisters Amanda Wright and Kristen Wright led the team in shots with two apiece. A. Wright put both of hers on goal, forcing Jessica Binkowski to make two of her three saves.
Queens goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki made three saves as well.
Play in the 2009 AASU Pirate Shootout wraps up on Sunday with host AASU taking on Queens at 11am, then Florida Southern facing GCSU at 1:30pm at AT&T Field.
