St. Leo finishes first at Flagler Fall Slam

The Royals finished in 16th place.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Saint Leo University women's golf team lead wire-to-wire to win the seventh annual Flagler Fall Slam Tuesday afternoon at the Slammer and Squire Course at the World Golf Village (par 72, 6007 yards). Queens University of Charlotte finished 16th overall.

The Royals stepped their play up greatly in day two of the tournament finishing with the seventh highest score of the day, 325. However, their play from the previous day proved to hold them in the bottom tier of the list as they ended the Flagler Fall Slam with a combined score of 667. The score was 50 strokes behind the first place finisher, St. Leo University. Queens was led by Marjorie Whitney (Wilmington, N.C., Eugene Ashley) on day two as she shot a 79 to give her a combined score of 165. Whitney improved her game by seven strokes from day one. Camilla Mallberg (Stockholm, Sweden, Danderyds Gymnasium)led her team tied at the 40th spot with a combined score of 163. Her play improved in the second day as well as she finished 18 strokes behind the number one player overall, Anna Riss. Amanda Kehr (Hollidaysburg, Pa., Hollidaysburg) stayed consistent shooting an 86 both days.

The Lions topped the 19-team field with a 617 and held off hard charging Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, who climbed from ninth and finish second overall, by five strokes. Anna Riss of Saint Leo took home medalist honors after finishing the 36-hole, 93-woman event with a 1-over 145. She shot the lowest round of the tournament, a 1-under 71, yesterday. Emily Gibson of the University of Montevallo finished second just three shots back with a 148.

Kaitlyn Edwards (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) finished a season-best fifth place with a 7-over 151. She shot her best round of the fall campaign in the first round with a 75. This was also her best finish since finishing fifth at the University of West Georgia Invitational Mar. 24, 2009. Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden/Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) placed 24th with a 16-over 160. Laura Martellino (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS) finished in a tie for 32nd place with an 18-over 162. She carded a 77 this afternoon which is a career-best. Kristie Feltner (St. Augustine, Fla./Middletown (Ohio) Christian) closed with a 22-over 166 and tied for 53rd place. Her 81 this afternoon was the best round of the season. Dana Quinn (Alachua, Fla./Santa Fe HS) rounded out Flagler's point scorers with a 36-over 180 and finished in a tie for 81st place.

Meaghan Gulliksen (Ormond Beach, Fla./U. of West Florida) finished in a tie with Quinn, playing as an individual, with a 180. She knocked two shots off her first round total this afternoon with an 89. Marissa Marinan (Niceville, Fla./Niceville HS), also playing as an individual, carded a 35-over 179 to finish in 80th place.
