WILSON, NC — The Queens University of Charlotte Royals spoiled homecoming for the Lady Bulldogs of Barton on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 conquest.
The Conference Carolinas loss left Barton at 3-11-2 overall and 3-6-2 in the league. The Lady Bulldogs' fate as to if they'll make the eight-team field for the league tourney is still in doubt. Barton finishes regular-season play on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when non-conference rival UNC Pembroke visits.
Queens rose to 8-9-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference after posting a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Barton defense held strong for much of the first half before Queens scored twice in a 38-second span. Freshman forward Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) scored at 34:52 when she received a cross from freshman Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) (Salisbury, MD) and booted the ball into the lower left corner of the net. At 35:30, Wright took a serve into the box from senior Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) and finished it into the right side for a 2-0 cushion. The Royals wrapped up the scoring in the 63rd minute. Johnson served the ball in the box and Wright flicked it to sophomore Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ) who blasted a shot into the goal.
Senior Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) played the first half in goal for Queens and earned the win. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) tended net for the second half. They combined for three saves. Freshman Barton keeper Jo-Jo Lovette (Lillington, NC) collected six saves, including one off a penalty kick in the first half.
The Royals have their final regular season home game on Wednesday night against Converse College at 6:00 p.m.
