CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Senior Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) sent a long lofting ball into the far side of the box when Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside ) buried the pass in the back of the net. The single goal was enough to lift Queens University of Charlotte over Erskine College by a score of 1-0 at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park in Conference Carolinas action.
The Royals three seniors, Johnson, goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) and defensive player Sarah Schoenhals (Medford, Oregon, South Medford), led the defense in the shutout. Kornacki picks up her first shut-out of the season.
Adding to a strong and perfect defense today was a consistent midfield anchored by freshman Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa., Penn Manor) and sophomore Kathryn Sylvester (Cary, N.C., Apex ). The two combined for five of Queens 18 shots and created multiple opportunities throughout the 90 minute contest.
Queens (6-9-1/4-2-1 Conference Carolinas) scored the game-winner in the 60th minute of play and held the Flying Fleet (6-7/5-4CC) for the remaining 30 minutes. A. Wright's goal is the second for her this week. Against Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 13 she scored the game-tying goal and Queens went on to defeat LRU 2-1.
The Royals held the offensive edge the entire game outshooting Erskine by nine shots, 18-7, and had triple the amount of corner kicks, 6-2.
Queens will travel to Laurinburg, N.C., to play St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Oct. 21. The game is slated to start a 2pm.
