For the second consecutive game the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team gave the spectators at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park a little extra soccer. The Royals and Mars Hill College played a full 110 minutes to finish in a 3-3 draw. The tie give the Royals a record of 0-3-1 while the Lions 1-1-4.
Freshman Kathryn Sylvester (Raleigh, N.C., Apex )gave Queens a one goal lead just seven minutes into play when she finished a cross from senior Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem ). The goal is Sylvester's first this season.
The visiting Lions answered twice, first in the 14th minute and again seven minutes later. Alicia Blaha scored the first goal from Abby Marting and Misha Price assisted Frankie Armstrong for the second.
Queens' Rose Balderson (Trappe, Md., Saints Peter and Paul )evened the score at two before halftime when she beat goalie Becca Sellars in a one on one situation. Amanda Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside )provided the assist, her first of the season.
Senior Mary-Ashley Davino (Roswell, Ga., Roswell )put the Royals up by one eight minutes into the second half. The assist came from freshman Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ).
The last goal in regulation was scored by Garret Paton in the 65th minute of play off of a ball from Kayla Schieck.
Byzewski almost scored the game-winner with just a few minute left on the clock. She beat her defender down the field, beat Sellars and chipped a shot to the far post. The ball ricocheted off the post to the feet of Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's )who ripped a shot only to be blocked by a Lion defender. Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside )hit the rebounded ball and sent it just over the crossbar.
Queens earned four corner kicks in the overtime periods, but was unable to connect on any for the game-winning goal.
In total, Queens tallied 16 shots, had nine corners and goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )made six saves. Mars Hill recorded 24 shots, two corners and Sellars made four saves.
Queens hosts UNC-Pembroke at 5pm on Wednesday at the Queens Sports Complex.
