Volleyball Picks Up First Win of Season

Royals defeat Coker in five games

In a Conference Carolinas battle for the ages, the Queens University Royals, snapped their four match losing streak with a five set, 3-2 victory over the Coker College Lady Cobras in collegiate volleyball on Tuesday night. It was a back and forth match with Coker winning the first and third sets, 25-20 and 25-23, while Queens took home the win with victories in sets two, four and five, with scores of 25-14, 25-23, and 15-11. 

Queens improves to 1-4 overall, and 1-0 in the conference, while the loss drops the Lady Cobras to 1-4 overall, and 0-1 in the conference.

For the Royals, Keatin McKenzie (Coral Springs, Fla., Cardinal Gibbons )led the way with 14 kills, 17 digs and two blocks, while Amanda Valbert (Champaign, Ill., Champaign Central )had 47 assists and Tanisha Lea (Efland, N.C., Orange Senior )had four service aces. Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley )played consistently throughout the match and sealed the win for Queens with a match-point block in game five.

 Leading the Lady Cobras was Kristin Teets with 21 kills, while Trisha Moore and Paige Murray each had seven kills, with Murray adding three blocks. Kelsey Carlson was Coker's dig leader with 18 digs, while Courtney Nelson and Laura Beth Lee each had 12 digs in the match, with Nelson dishing out 32 assists and Lee netting four service aces. 

Queens  plays Brevard in their next match, but the Royals will play the Tornados at home on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
