GAFFNEY, S.C.- Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood )scored the game-winning goal with just one minute left to play in the Conference Carolinas contest at Limestone COllege on Saturday, Sept. 27. Johnson's goal gave Queens University of Charlotte the 2-1 victory and improves the Royals conference record to a perfect 4-0 (4-4-1 overall).
Limestone (2-7-0 overall/1-3 conference) found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard just 25 seconds in when Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem ) scored a breakaway goal. Byzewski was one of three Queens players with two shots, but she was the only one who put both on goal.
Two minutes before the end of the first half, the Saints Bekki Hagarman evened the game at one.
Queens was trailing in shots, 3-4, in the first half, but turned it around in the second outshooting Limestone 7-2. The extra offensive pressure paid off.
With just one minute left to play, the Royals were awarded a free kick. Johnson stepped up, and sank the ball for the lead.
Queens goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )had one save as Limestone's Diane Boyce (Toccoa, Ga.) posted three.
Queens heads to Hickory, N.C., to play Lenoir-Rhyne University on September 30 at 7:30 p.m. Limestone travels to Hartsville, S.C., to play Coker College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
