Royals Women’s Soccer Victorious Over Saint Andrews

The women’s soccer team records its first shutout of the season

Megan McCarrell (Oviedo, Fla., Oviedo ) scored her first goal in a Queens University of Charlotte uniform tonight in the 2-0 shutout of Conference Carolinas opponent Saint Andrews Presbyterian College at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. Queens improves to a 2-0 in conference action and 2-4-1 overall. The loss drops Saint Andrews to 0-2 in league play and 1-3-1 overall.

McCarrell netted her first goal of the game just four minutes before halftime. Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside )put up a cross inside the box and McCarrell finished with her head. Straino earned her second assist of the season.

The shot was just one of 11 Queens took in the first half, more than tripling the shots they gave up.

In the second stanza the Royals did not let up the offensive pressure. Defender Mary-Ashley Davino (Roswell, Ga., Roswell )cleared a ball towards midfield and hit offensive powerhouse of the game Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem ). Byzewski dribbled closer to the goal and beat goalie Garrison Burton for the goal in the 49th minute. The score is Byzewski's third in two games.

The Knights were able to double their shots in the second half to six, but Queens still held the offensive edge with 11. Two Queens players registered the game-high five shots, Kathryn Sylvester (Raleigh, N.C., Apex )and Katherine Carr (Upper Marlboro, Md. , St. Mary's ). The nine Knights shots came from nine different players.

Royals keeper Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills )saw four shots on goal and made three saves in the game. Burton had eight put on goal by the Royals offense and made four saves.

Queens hosts Anderson University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 2pm.
