CHARLOTTE, N.C.- On the heels of six players being named to the All-Conference Teams and Coach Katie Talbert being named Coach of the Year, the Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team has been knocked out of the Conference Carolinas tournament by Pfeiffer University tonight at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park . The Falcons advance to the conference championship by defeating Queens 1-0.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half. The first 45 minutes of play saw each team taking four shots, each team taking one corner kick, but Queens' (11-9-2/10-0-1 CC) goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) making three saves while Pfeiffer's (13-8/8-3 CC) Jamie Alcala made just one.
In the 57th minute the game changed for the Royals. Queens was now on the losing side of the scoreboard, for one of the first times against a conference team this season.
Megan Blevins took the Falcons' only corner kick of the half and put the ball in the back of the net.
Queens battled for the remaining 33 minutes, but were unable to put one past Alcala.
Pfeiffer held an edge in shots during the second 45, 4-2. Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood )recorded the game-high three shots. Blevins had the Pfeiffer high two shots.
The Falcons now face Belmont Abbey College on Saturday for the conference championship.
