Women’s Soccer Conference Carolinas Co-Champs!

Royals look to defend 2007 tourney championship title

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.-  Kathryn Sylvester (Raleigh, N.C., Apex )scored the game-winning goal today to lift the Royals over Mount Olive College, 1-0, and secured Queens University of Charlotte's piece of the Conference Carolinas regular season Championship.

The Royals (10-7-2/10-0-1 CC) share the 2008 Conference Champion title with Belmont Abbey College. Queens last wore the regular season crown in 2006. Now, the Royals will enter the conference tournament seeded No. 2, behind Belmont Abbey, due to a tie-breaker points system that awarded the Crusaders 34 points and Queens 31.

The difference between being crowned co-champions or watching from the sidelines came in the 32nd minute of play against the Trojans today at Amon Field. Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va., Salem )fed Sylvester a through ball and Sylvester finished the play with an 18-yard shot.

The Queens defense was impenetrable during the game, denying the Trojans any shots in the first half and giving them two in the second. The Royals offense tallied 10 shots, six in the first and four in the second. Byzewski led the team with three, two on goal.

Goalie Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run )made two saves in the contest for the Royals and Jenn Sastre made six for the Trojans.

Last year the Royals claimed the 2007 Conference Carolinas Tournament Title advancing and winning the championship with penatly kicks.

Queens now hosts St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Monday at 7pm in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. The semifinal round is scheduled for Thursday with the championship game taking place on Saturday, all at the higher seed.
