Class of 1972
Women's Basketball and Tennis 1968-1972
Margaret Sakowski Moore grew up in Morganton, N.C., and after high school graduation she followed her sister, Carolyn, class of 1970, to then Queens College. In 1972, Moore graduated from Queens University of Charlotte with a degree in History and a teaching certification in secondary education. As a student she participated on the basketball and tennis teams, was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and was also the president of the Recreation Association. Moore was a Dana Scholar and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Upon graduation from Queens, she attended the University of Georgia where she received her MEd in Physical Education in the spring of 1973.
In the fall of 1973, Moore began her teaching and coaching career at Converse College. Even while being heavily involved in physical education as a professor, Moore remained equally as invested in athletics. In her time at Converse, Moore coached and was involved in five sports including field hockey, tennis, basketball, volleyball and synchronized swimming. At times she taught a full load and coached four sports in one year. Moore showed an uncanny ability to balance her involvement in education, athletics and family. This was shown in 1977 as she received from Converse College the Kathryne Amelia Brown Award for excellence in teaching and in 1988, 1992 and 1993 she was awarded the NAIA District Six Tennis Coach of the Year. Her tennis teams were ranked nationally and she coached an All American tennis player. Her teams consistently received Academic All American honors. In addition to these honors she consistently played on the Deep South Field Hockey All Star teams and even competed against Olympic teams from New Zealand and Canada. She was also continually ranked as one of the top five tennis players in her age group in South Carolina tennis.
After ending an almost thirty year run as athletic director for Converse in 2006, Moore began to focus solely on teaching as she emphasized the importance of overall wellness and fitness for the young women at Converse. As the Chair of the Physical Education Department and Director of Intramurals and Fitness Programs, she implemented several new courses and programs for young women.
In addition to teaching, Moore has been and is currently heavily involved in committee work and service to the college. Much of her spare time has been devoted to community activities involving youth sports for girls and physical fitness. She even found time to coach her daughters’ teams in soccer, basketball and swimming. Her other strong involvement in the community is with the American Red Cross water safety programs, which she credits last year’s inductee, Ruth Magher, for getting her involved.
Moore, beginning her 40th year at Converse College as Associate Professor in Physical Education , resides, along with her husband, Dana, in Spartanburg, S.C. and she has two grown children, Meagan and Brennan, and a son-in-law, Dave Roberts. During her spare time, she enjoys sports, working in the garden, reading and quilting.
