Dr. Kara Wooten was a member of the women’s volleyball team at Queens from 1990-1993 when the Royals were competing as an independent NCAA Division II member. Listed at over six feet tall and hailing from Charleston, W. Va., Wooten came to the Royals a much decorated high school dual-sport athlete. The middle hitter led the Royals and the nation with a .469 hitting percentage during her junior season, helping Queens turn in a 22-15 season record. That same year, she was named the team captain and earned MVP honors. It was the second winning season in a row for Queens who posted a 16-10 record in 1991.
Additional accolades include Who’s Who in College Athletics honors in 1993 and 1994, most valuable player recognition in 1993 and 1994, and all-American Scholar acknowledgement for three seasons. She was also named the Queens Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 1994.
Following graduation, the English/drama and studio art major went on to get her master’s degree in directing and technical theatre from the University of Kentucky. She then earned her doctorate in acting/directing and theatre history/criticism from Texas Tech University.
Currently, Wooten is an assistant professor in the English department at Queens. Wooten’s credits include academic pursuits as well as professional theatre, television, and film work. She is a Senior Fight Director with The Society of Canadian Fight Directors and a Master Instructor with the Academy of Dramatic Combat. Kara is the author of “Acted Aggression” a manual of basic stage combat techniques.
