David “DJ” Johnson joined the Queens men’s soccer team in 1999, immediately making an impact as a freshman. The defender was named to the All-CVAC Second Team after helping the Royals post a 9-2 league record to earn CVAC Regular Season Champion recognition. The Royals were also CVAC Tournament Champions in 1999, moving on to make their first NCAA appearance. Their season would come to a close with their record sitting at 18-3 in the Elite 8. Following a stellar freshman season, Johnson went on to help the Royals continue their success throughout his career as they went on to snag two more regular season titles and one more tournament championship. During Johnson’s senior season, the Royals made it back to the NCAA Championships; this time reaching the Sweet 16 and finishing the year with a 16-2-2 overall record.
Following Johnson’s second team appearance in his freshman season, he was named to the All-CVAC First Team for three consecutive years. He also earned recognition on the all-southeast region team for three straight seasons. In 2001, Johnson earned the highest honor getting recognized as an all-American. During his career, the Royals went 51-24-3 and for his contributions to their success, the CVAC placed Johnson on their all-time team. Johnson was team captain his senior year.
